Trouble Logging in?

Do you have these symptoms?

  • You are on the Members' home page, you are giving the correct login name and password, but nothing apparently happens when you press "LOGIN".
  • Any click on a members' only action in the menu (try "ADIA") places you on the Login page, but again nothing happens when you press "LOGIN".

then read on.

What's happening is that your browser is not accepting 'cookies'. A cookie is a small piece of information that the server downloads to your browser. It is stored and sent to the server when you visit the site next. Your browser is not storing the cookie we are sending. So we don't see the cookie and we cannot log you in, we are trying to - but your browser isn't playing.

You need to enable cookie storage - but because there are so many different browsers - it's hard to give you a definitive step-by-step guide to turning them on.

IE Privacy optionsInternet Explorer

Most people use Internet Explorer. To set and check cookie storage: find the menu named 'Tools' on the browser page and click on 'Internet Options' (you can also get there on most Windows systems by going to your Control Panel. You'll find a version of Internet Options there - you may have to dig a bit to find it). Anyway, once you've got to Internet Options click on the 'Privacy' tab - and you should get a box somewhat like the image on the right (depending on the version of IE you are using).

Set the slider to Medium. This allows web sites to send you cookies, but any embedded site delivering say adverts cannot. If you are worried about doing this then can click on 'Sites' and JUST allow cookies from www.adi.org.uk. On balance, Medium is an OK setting for using the internet.

Firefox

If you are using Firefox, click 'Options' and the 'Privacy' tab. Tick 'Accept cookies from sites'. It's a good idea to ensure that the 'Accept third-party cookies' is not ticked so embedded adverts cannot deposit cookies on your machine.

Safari

On a Mac - click on 'Preferences' and 'Security', look down the pane and find "Accept Cookies". I suggest that you tick 'Only from the sites I visit' radio button.

On a PC, click safari action buttonon the rightmost menu at the top of the browser screen, and select Preferences. Then follow the instructions above.

Other Browsers

You need to look in the help system to find 'Cookie' and learn how to control them.
