ADI Mentor RegisterThe launch of a generic Mentor Register marks a further milestone for the ADI. The ADI, as a professional body, continues to look at pathways to improve the quality of care for the public undergoing dental implant treatment. While the ADI Charter clearly sets out standards for the treatment and maintenance of patients and the General Dental Council (regulatory body for all dentistry in the UK) states that “dental professionals have an ethical responsibility to limit their scope of practice to what they are trained and competent to do”, the ADI recognises that much more still needs to be done to help advance the education of implant dentistry through hands-on implant training. For over 20 years, mentoring, has historically enabled many UK dentists to improve their skills in the practice implantology. The recently revised Training Standards in Implant Dentistry now endorses the need for “mentoring as an essential part of implant training”. The setting up of the ADI Mentor Register will further enable dentists seeking individual hands-on experience to find peers willing to communicate their own knowledge and experience at a pace that can be flexible to suit both parties. Members wishing to find a mentor may now search by name, region, or system. Members wishing to mentor, who satisfy the stated selection criteria, may apply on line to be accepted on the programme in 2009. The ADI hopes in time, to extend its Mentor Register throughout all regions of the UK so that dentists will be able to find a local mentor to suit their needs. |
