Warwickshire Study Club - 29 September 2010The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Zirconia in Dental Implantology Synopsis: Zirconia now has a well-documented history in biomaterials science. This presentation will briefly look at the chemistry, structure and technology involved in preparing zirconia for intra-oral use. The evidence for using zirconia implants, abutments and crown and bridge frameworks will then be reviewed, and a practice audit presented. Clinical examples will be shown demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages of these materials in the context of dental implantology. There will be ample time for questions. Stephen E B Jones qualified from UCH London in 1983 and carried out restorative training in association with part-time practice and undergraduate teaching in London until moving to Newbury in 1988. He started restoring dental implants after basic training in 1989 and subsequently started to place implants in 1993. He lectures widely and has run many courses in Implantology over the last ten years. He opened the award winning referral practice, Pentangle Dental Transformations, in Newbury in 2006 and recently authored the course on 'Fixed Implant Prosthetics' in the recent ADI online learning initiative (Ark). He is an ADI Mentor and is a member of EAO, BSRD & BAAD. He has a special interest in education, standards and the potential conflict between innovation and the established base of evidence predicting long term success. |
