Abstract

Meeting patient expectations can be one of our greatest challenges in dentistry today. The internet, social media, and reality TV all contribute to a misinformed and misguided sense of what is possible and can make implant dentistry a particular challenge.

Understanding your patient and what they expect from their treatment is crucial to their perception of a successful outcome. A detailed examination, and a comprehensive explanation of what is planned and anticipated can make all the difference, and reduce the risk of a patient complaint. This presentation will review some of the usual and unusual issues and concerns that would be better discussed and documented before treatment begins,. and also describe some of the steps in the planning and execution of implant treatments that will contribute to patient satisfaction, and help to ensure that expectations are met or surpassed

AIMs:

  • To provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges we face in managing patient expectations.
  • To consider some psychological factors which may impact upon care
  • To equip our teams with the knowledge and strategies to avoid patient complaints by aligning expectations with realistic treatment outcomes.
  • To emphasize the importance of thorough communication and planning to enhance patient satisfaction and reduce risks in implant procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyse common sources of unrealistic patient expectations in implant dentistry
  • Implement effective communication strategies to ensure patients have a clear and accurate understanding of the implant procedure and expected outcome
  • Identify potential concerns and issues that may arise before treatment begins and document them appropriately to protect both the patient and practitioner
  • Apply best practices in the planning and execution of implant treatments that contribute to high levels of patient satisfaction
