Biography

Duncan returned to Scotland at the age of 16 from Zimbabwe and, after studying at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, started his dental training in Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School in 1998.

After qualification, his interest in oral medicine led to studying oral keratoses and their pre-malignant status in a clinical and laboratory study leading to his PhD.

Duncan entered general dental practice in Edinburgh in the early 1990s and set up his fresh start practice in 1993. Since moving to larger premises and expanding to three surgeries in 2003, he has adhered to the highest standards in practice in accordance with the Denplan Excel Accreditation programme. He dedicated considerable interest to the regional BDA becoming the Branch President in 2000. In that year, he organised a debate “Amalgam will not be in clinical use in 20 years” which now has historical significance.

Furthermore, Duncan dedicated considerable time to working with the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in developing examinations that would be both more appealing and more accessible to the busy dental practitioner. He remains an Examiner for MPDC and MFDS.

In 2011, he was inspired to invent an adjustable abutment for the internal connection implant. Working closely with Southern Implants, a prototype and definitive design was manufactured. The first case using the abutment called “Orbital Connector” or “OC” comprised six implants supporting a full maxillary arch. This early work has been presented to local, national and international audiences.

Duncan’s practice provides general dental care, specialist orthodontic and implant treatment. He has largely provided his patients with both the surgical and restorative treatments since 2005. He now works closely with his three colleagues within the practice on restorative, orthodontic and implant solutions for both referred and patients in his practice. In addition to chairing a number of national implant meetings, he is a member of:

  • Association of Dental Implantology (ADI)
  • Association of Osseointegration (AO)
  • British Society of Occlusal Studies (BSOS)
  • International Team for Implantology (ITI)

He works with a fabulous staff of 15 who believe in delivering a special journey to each and every patient.

In his spare time, Duncan can be found on his mountain bike, golf course, making wooden furniture or tinkering with a 1969 TR6.
