Student Ambassadors Join the ADI Masterclass

We were delighted to welcome members of all clinical backgrounds to the Institution of Engineering and Technology London in late November, the event particularly stood out because of its accessibility to dental students.

At the ADI Masterclass: Soft Tissue Regeneration (in collaboration with the Osteology Foundation) we welcomed a number of ADI student ambassadors, giving them vital exposure to leading speakers from across the world.

Clinicians convened in the Kelvin Lecture Theatre throughout the day to hear about topics such as soft tissue treatments for clinical defects, considerations for immediate implant placement, and technical and nontechnical aspects of suturing, amongst much more.

Maria Botros, an ADI student ambassador who studies at the University of Birmingham, was delighted with the Masterclass and said:

“The speakers were so good; I honestly loved all the videos of surgery that they were showing. I was picking up things here and there, like the guided bone remodelling using membranes and collagen materials.

“100%, I would recommend ADI membership and events to others.”

World-class speakers

We pride ourselves on the ability to call on our decorated members and esteemed contacts to deliver events that are a highlight of the clinical calendar. For students, it’s a prime opportunity for exposure to new aspects of implant dentistry. Benjamin Fountaine studies at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and is an ADI student ambassador. He noted:

“As a student, I found the Masterclass very interesting and a great opportunity to listen to some extremely qualified and experienced speakers talk in-depth about topics outside the range that we learn in school.”

Student ambassador Sharad Sharda felt similarly, saying:

“The amount of experience the speakers had was outstanding and the quality of the lectures was very high. The range of topics has been phenomenal as I feel they are building on each other very nicely. Professor (Frank) Schwarz’s lecture was particularly enjoyable as I found the combination flap method very interesting.

“ADI membership has meant I have met some great people and learned a lot.”

Professor Schwarz is the Vice President and Chair of the Education Committee at the Osteology Foundation, bringing a breadth of clinical experience to the Masterclass. His lecture delved into soft tissue management for challenging cases of hard tissue augmentation, lending his expertise on the topic alongside visual material of cases he successfully presided over.

He was amongst an array of speakers that included Professor Nikolaos Donos, Chair of the Science Committee at the Osteology Foundation and Academic Representative at the ADI, who opened the event alongside ADI President Dr Zaki Kanaan.

Dr Kanaan was delighted to be able to present the opportunity to learn from so many esteemed clinicians. When talking about the speakers, he proudly said,

“We have never had this many, and of this calibre.”

Perfect first steps

For individuals who are still early in their studies and clinical career, ADI Masterclasses are an excellent chance to dive head-first into complex surgical principles and build up a background of knowledge to take back to their work. Student Ambassador Melvin Adusei spoke about the accessibility of the lectures, and said:

“I thought the speakers were very systematic in their presentations. As a student, even though the content was a little advanced, the concepts were explained well enough to understand. I particularly liked the talk about immediate implants (led by Professor France Lambert).

“These events are a great way to gain further insight into procedures I’d hopefully want to do one day, as well as creating networking opportunities.”

ADI Student Ambassadors play an essential role in the future of implant dentistry. Not only do they gain unparalleled access to a wide range of educational events, courses and study clubs in order to develop their skills, but they also help to organise connections between the wider student body and dental professionals. Their role sees them organise university talks, support at trade fairs, and raising awareness of ADI student membership amongst their community.

Bijay Mistry, a Student Ambassador at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, said:

“The ADI is a great community-driven organisation that heavily focuses on its members, ranging from students to experienced clinicians.

“There is ample to take away from each event for people of all skills and abilities due to the carefully crafted lectures delivered to an outstanding calibre.

“I feel very privileged to be recognised as a student ambassador of such an esteemed and reputable association, being provided with many priceless opportunities. I can’t wait to continue and prosper on my journey with the ADI.”

Students can get in touch with the ADI today to find out more about becoming an ambassador, and attending events such as future Masterclasses.
