Supporting the way to success with the ADI Scholarship Initiative

The ADI is driven to advance education and knowledge on dental implantology, both for the public and those in the dental industry. A crucial part of this is ensuring that the next generation of dental professionals are supported, providing enough security and stability to allow people from diverse backgrounds to engage and flourish within dentistry.

The ADI Scholarships Initiative was launched to initially encourage students and dentists of Black and Afro-Caribbean heritage, studying at any level at a UK university, to participate more in the implantology field. The scheme offers mentoring, financial assistance and access to the best knowledge and career advice in the industry. An assessment panel, comprised of educators, academics, representatives of organisations supporting black dentists and the ADI itself, convened to select the successful applicants.

Opening new doors

Dr Toyin Aiyebusi, a general and cosmetic dentist at the Zero Seven Dental Practice, is a recipient of one of the ADI Scholarships. Reflecting on the unique opportunity, Toyin stated:

“Receiving this award was truly a great honour and it is something that I am extremely proud of. The scholarship is forward thinking by giving this opportunity for black clinicians to excel in implantology. I believe this has the potential to generate a positive impact, one that fosters a diverse and skilled cohort of implant dentists.

“I am driven to become the best implant clinician I can, and the scholarship will support me in this, opening new doors such as membership to the ADI and access to Masterclasses, Study Clubs and events. This should give me a strong start to a career in implant dentistry and I am excited to make the most of these educational and networking events.

“Implant dentistry requires a long-term commitment and involves a significant learning curve. With the support and experience of the ADI, I hope that I have the confidence to navigate this journey successfully.”

From student to success

For dental students, the scholarship bridges the gap between academia and the profession, giving them the support needed to make the crossing smoothly.

Dr Tanaka Kadiyo is a Masters student at University College London and was presented with an ADI Scholarship at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, London. On the role the award will play, Tanaka comments:

“Receiving an ADI Scholarship is a huge stepping stone, one that I can take to further my education in implant dentistry. Compared to the rest of dentistry, the world of implants feels a bit different; it is filled with plenty of new challenges but I now have greater confidence in exploring the sector further.

“Through the benefits of the scholarship, I now have the opportunity to get more involved; to start putting theory to practice. With excellent mentorship and support I can hopefully begin restoring implants, then from there I can take the steps towards surgeries and placing them.

“Getting to meet members of the ADI at a Masterclass, as well as the Next Gen committee, was great. Sharing experiences with dental professionals is invaluable, helping me see how their journey was and the steps they took to get there, as well as answering many questions and providing tips. I look forward to diving further into the opportunities afforded to me by the scholarship.”

The ADI Scholarship Initiative breaks barriers for a more inclusive future in dental implantology, ensuring that professional avenues are open to all. Being part of the ADI means being part of a welcoming, equal network of like-minded dental professionals, each of whom strive towards clinical excellence in delivering implant treatments.
