Lecture 1 - The Biomechanics of Implant Prosthodontics
Implant restorations succeed or fail not only because of surgical execution but because of the prosthodontic decisions that determine how forces are transmitted throughout the restorative system. Unlike natural teeth, implants lack a periodontal ligament and possess limited capacity to accommodate unfavourable loading, making thoughtful restorative design fundamental to long-term success.
This lecture will explore the biomechanical principles underpinning contemporary implant prosthodontics and examine how restorative choices influence technical complications. Topics will include implant-protected occlusion, occlusal table design, cantilevers, offset loading, crown height space, preload and screw mechanics, torque protocols, and the management of screw loosening and fracture. The influence of parafunction and bruxism will also be discussed, together with practical strategies to minimise mechanical complications in both single-tooth and implant-supported fixed prostheses.
Drawing upon current evidence and clinical experience, the session will provide delegates with a practical framework for recognising biomechanical risk before treatment begins and applying restorative principles that improve predictability and longevity. The emphasis will not be on memorising complications once they occur, but on understanding the prosthodontic decisions that prevent them.
Lecture 2 - Chasing Zero: The Decisions Behind Lasting Marginal Bone Stability
Some crestal bone remodelling is considered inevitable. Rather than asking how much bone loss is “normal”, this session asks a more clinically useful question: which decisions shape the outcome? Beginning with the biological mechanisms of crestal bone loss, it will trace a clear path from biological principle to everyday clinical choices, including implant positioning, depth of placement, soft-tissue management, prosthetic design, and surgical execution.

- With the aim which is not to promise that bone loss can always be eliminated, but to show that many of its determinants are within our control. Zero may be an aspiration, but it could be closer than we think.
