The Atrophic Maxilla Revisited: Two Decades Of Experience With Zygomatic And Pterygoid Implants
Download Event to Calendar
Presented by: Dr. Andrew Dawood, MRD RCS, MSC, BDS, FCGD Dent
Host: Dr Fiona MacKillop
Date: 4 November 2026 7:00PM – 10:00PM
Time: 19:00 Registration, Refreshments/Food, 19:30 Lecture
Location: 1 Wimpole Street, Westminster, London, W1G 0AE
WHY ATTEND
Andrew will look back on two decades of experience using zygomatic and pterygoid implants for the rehabilitation of the severely atrophic maxilla. Through a series of clinical cases, the presentation will explore how treatment philosophies have evolved alongside improvements in imaging, digital planning, implant design and restorative protocols.
The lecture examines patient selection, surgical planning, anatomical considerations, prosthetic principles and the management of complications. The presentation also considers where pterygoid implants complement or replace zygomatic implants, enabling many patients to avoid sinus grafting while reducing treatment time and morbidity. Throughout, the emphasis is on practical decision-making, recognising limitations, and selecting the simplest predictable solution for each patient. The role of immediate loading, the integration of digital planning, guided surgery and and 3D printing technologies will be discussed.

Learning objectives
By the end of this lecture delegates should be able to:
- Assess when zygomatic implants, pterygoid implants or conventional implant treatments are the most appropriate option for rehabilitation of the atrophic maxilla.
- Understand the key anatomical and prosthetic principles that underpin successful zygomatic and pterygoid implant treatment.
- Recognise how digital planning, CBCT imaging and modern surgical workflows have improved accuracy, predictability and patient outcomes.
- Identify common complications and appreciate how treatment planning and surgical technique can minimise their occurrence.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
► Dr. Andrew Dawood, MRD RCS, MSC, BDS, FCGD Dent
Dr Andrew Dawood is a Specialist in Prosthodontics and Periodontics and co-founder of Dawood & Tanner Specialist Referral Practice in London. He has been involved in implant dentistry for over 35 years and has a particular interest in the rehabilitation of patients with severe maxillary atrophy, maxillofacial trauma and head and neck oncology.
An early adopter of digital technologies, Andrew founded one of the UK's first dedicated dental CBCT imaging centres and has been at the forefront of integrating three-dimensional imaging, digital planning, guided surgery and CAD/CAM technologies into implant practice. He has lectured extensively throughout the UK and internationally on advanced implant reconstruction, the management of implant failure, digital dentistry and treatment planning.
His clinical practice includes the use of zygomatic, pterygoid and other advanced implant techniques for patients in whom conventional implant treatment would otherwise require extensive grafting. He has over 20 years' experience with zygomatic implants and continues to refine their application through advances in digital planning, navigation and restorative workflows.
