Introduction

The lack of a periodontal ligament means that implants react to functional loads very differently to teeth. This means occlusion on implant restorations must be planned very carefully. Restoration fracture, wear, abutment screw loosening, abutment fracture, fixture fracture and crestal bone loss can all be a sign of occlusal overload on implants. This lecture aims to introduce concepts which will allow dentists to plan occlusion on their implant restorations, so they may last as long as possible, and avoid fractures, failures and refunds.

Learning objectives

  • Increase understanding of implants and occlusion, allowing the planning and execution successful implant restorations

  • Discuss occlusion terminology

  • Discuss case studies for single tooth restorations, short span bridges, long span bridges, and full arch restorations
