Management of the Posterior Maxilla

The maxillary sinus influences many cases and dictates how and where we can place implants.

Historically the sinus lift technique was frequently our "go to" procedure to augment bone.

But this adds complexity, time and expense!

We now have modern engineering and techniques that reduce our need for sinus augmentation.

So if you want to increase your case acceptance and learn how to manage challenging cases more easily, then a full understanding of the range of options available is crucial.

Mark Willings has over 30 years experience with dental implants. He has seen the evolution from iliac crest block reconstruction as a routine approach to the maxillary sinus. To less invasive approaches which he now routinely employs and achieves excellent, consistent results with reduced morbidity and fewer complications.

Mark will speak about this evolution and show how you can manage many cases with reduced bone volume in the posterior maxilla without the need for an open lateral window approach.  Using examples of cases using block grafts and particulate lateral window approaches, through to use of “Max” and Pterygoid implants.

And will cover techniques including Summers lift using conventional osteotomes and the use of Versah burs.

Learning objectives:

• Understand how techniques have developed and radically changed in the management of the atrophic posterior maxilla.

• Identify in which clinical cases these new approaches would be beneficial.

• Discuss and demonstrate with patients what is current best practice in management of the posterior maxilla.

Biography

After graduating from Guy’s Hospital in 1991, Mark worked in associate positions in Kent and Surrey before returning home to his native Yorkshire.

Mark gained membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) in 1998 and has completed the diploma in implant dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was awarded the Advanced Certificate. In 2007, he was awarded fellowship of the FGDP at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Mark’s focus has been exclusively in implant dentistry and he worked in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester for 10 years, where he gained experience treating very advanced cases for rehabilitation after cancer surgery. Mark has also held posts in postgraduate dental education at the University of Leeds, University of Manchester and The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mark lectures nationally on the use of dental implants for simple and complex rehabilitations and to maintain knowledge, he attends conferences and training courses all over the world.

Mark has acted as a key opinion leader for several implant companies and was on the founding board for Astra to deliver the highest levels of dental implant teaching for dentists. He published articles on implant dentistry and research during his time at Manchester where he was involved in the Cochrane collaboration.
